AVONCROFT Museum will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Britain’s ‘last red phonebox’ on Sunday, July 15, writes Sophie Hind.
The first K8 telephone kiosk was installed in Westminster in 1968, and Avoncroft is marking the occasion by presenting a public talk by telecommunications specialist Nigel Linge at 11am and 2pm in The Long Room.
Nigel Linge, of the University of Salford, said: “The K8 is often thought of as the forgotten or least-loved phonebox.
“If any local people have got photos we would love to see them and we’re looking forward to showing this 1960s icon some love.”
Local people who remember K8 from the 70s and 80s heyday are invited to indulge in some phonebox nostalgia. Visitors can browse the collection and have a go on working exchanges.
There will also be a chance to meet and have a book signed by authors of ‘The British Phonebox’ by Nigel Linge and Andy Sutton.
