Dicken’s Tricks – a talk by John Mullan

A WORDS Event…..Bringing the Best of the Spoken and Written Word to Bromsgrove

Learning and Resources Centre, Bromsgrove School. (Access via the Worcester Road Entrance and Car Park (B61 7HP) – Buggy will be available)

Charles Dickens, the nineteenth century novelist, is famous for being funny, but his formal daring and inventiveness often are ignored. He played tricks with the form of the novel which no other writer had attempted, and that which today’s novelists are still imitating. Looking closely at selected highlights from the author’s novels, John Mullan’s talk will show what an audacious and experimental writer he was – it will bring his books alive !!!

John makes a welcome return to WORDS, having made a well received visit in April 2015 with his talk on Jane Austen. He is Lord Northcliffe Professor of Modern English Literature at University College London, and has published widely on eighteenth and nineteenth century literature. His most recent book is “The Artful Dickens – signed copies of which will be available to purchase at the event”.

Tickets at £12.00 each are available via the Ticket Source Website: www.ticketsource.co.uk (In the Find Event Search Bar, type in “Dickens’s Tricks”) or from WORDS, Sycamore House, Rigby Lane, Bromsgrove B60 2EW Please make cheques payable to WORDS and include your postal and email addresses (if you have the latter).
