Ruddigore or The Witch's Curse

This is a great showcase for Sullivan’s musical dexterity, including some of the best music he ever wrote. The sparkling score is full of energy from the riveting to the grippingly ghoulish. Gilbert’s satire remains sharp and pertinent as it pokes fun at the aristocracy and the relationships between them and their servants and local folk. This ‘upstairs, downstairs’ situation will strike a chord with audiences of all ages.

Set in a Quaint Cornish fishing village Robin Oakapple is keeping his true identity secret. He is really a baronet who wants a new life, so he fakes his own death to achieve this, leaving his younger brother to inherit his title. The wit of W.S. Gilbert is manifested in a plot that has aristocrats in stately homes, young women looking for wealthy husbands, old ladies gossiping, gentlemen farmers providing work, local villains seeking help to go straight and young women going off the rails and ending up homeless. Add to that some Eton-type Hooray Henrys down at the seaside for a jolly with the local girls, a local philanthropist who wants people to marry rather than live in sin and all makes for a G & S classic full of great humour & fun.
