Bromsgrove Concerts – Alexander Baillie & John Thwaites(cello & piano). Emanuil Ivanov (piano)

Routh Hall, Bromsgrove School, B61 7DU

We welcome renowned duo Alexander Baillie and John Thwaites to perform Chopin and Debussy cello sonatas. Both are late pieces, masterful in their structure. Emanuil Ivanov, winner of the first prize at the 2019 Ferruccio Busoni Piano Competition, plays Beethoven’s D minor sonata, well known as the “Tempest”, full of dramatic contrasts and written during a difficult period in the composer’s life. We will also be treated to some lesser known works: Chopin’s Polish songs, beautifully transcribed by Liszt for solo piano, and Bax’s poignant folk tale for piano and cello.

The programme…

  • Debussy: Cello Sonata
  • Bax: Folk-Tale
  • Beethoven: Piano Sonata No 17 in D Minor Op31 No 2 ‘Tempest’
  • Chopin/Liszt: Six Polish Songs
  • Chopin: Cello Sonata Op 65
