Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood - All & Sundry Pantomime

    Directed by Alison Beresford

The wicked and greedy Prince John is desperate to become King, however his brother King Richard’s children stand in the way of him and the throne of England, so he orders the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham to have them kidnapped and disposed of….Permanently!

The Sheriff in turn hires two hapless baddies, Bashem and Thumpem to carry out the deed and comic ineptitude ensues. The ‘Babes’ are eventually kidnapped by the baddies but they can’t go through with killing the ‘Babes’ and instead abandon them in the woods.

However in true Pantomime style help is at hand in the form of our dashing hero, Robin Hood and his ‘Merry band of helpers’ assisted by Hayrick, Nursie and her faithful dog, Tyson.

This is a fantastic, traditional, fun filled Panto, with great set pieces, corny gags, song, dance and plenty of audience participation plus a few surprises on the way….

The Lost Notes - The Lost Notes emerged out of a collaboration between Moseley based songwriters Ben Mills and Oli Jobes. The results of their diverse musical influences are infectious songs rooted in three-part vocal harmony and driven by a dynamic rhythm section. The band features Lucy Mills, Ben Mills and Oli Jobes on vocals and guitars, with Silas Wood on double bass and Jamie Human on drums.

The Somerville Gentlemen's Band - Seventies folk boy-band The Somerville Gents are back in harness after a short rest of 30 years, and have developed a whole new repertoire of songs and tunes to delight their old fans and enthuse a whole new audience. Superb musicianship, great vocal harmonies and an eclectic mix of material are what made them so popular, and Jem, Ted and Phil are back doing with a vengeance.

Amy Kakoura and Andrew Sharpe - Amy and Andrew are best known on the folk scene as the singer and pianist with the band Steamchicken. Their two person show comprises a mix of folk, blues and jazz; songs and stories drawn from ‘Songs from a Ledge’, ‘Steamchicken’, an...d their own take on a few classics. Amy will showcase some numbers from her solo LP. Andrew will probably say something inappropriate, and we’ll all have a good laugh about it afterwards.

Well known explorer, author & BBC Radio 4 broadcaster John Pilkington returns to St John’s with his latest talk. On Tuesday 4th October John will deliver his presentation “Russia & Europe: What Next?” where he will recount the stories of his solo journey through Eastern Europe and into Russia.

When asked about his latest travels John said “Passions are running high in Ukraine and the breakaway states of the Caucasus. Vladimir Putin’s adventures in Ukraine took the West by surprise. But I think, in some ways they followed a pattern that goes back more than a century to the legendry “Great Game” between Russia and Britain in Victoria times. Since the Soviet Union’s break-up, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia have become Russia’s ‘forgotten’ satellite states – unrecognised and unheard of by most outsiders. Now Donetsk and Luhansk have joined the list, and Russia has full control of Crimea.

In 2015 John met people on both sides of these disputed borders, and promises some surprising insights in his talk.

Friends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade enthused “John has been described as “one of Britain’s best tellers of travellers’ tails, and his previous talks in St John’s have been inspiration and informative. John is a wonderful speaker, bring the tails of his travels to life with his fabulous photographs and enthusiastic and captivating style.

Tickets for John Pilkington “Russia & Europe: What Next?” are £7.50 each, with a special offer of just £2.50 for students. Available in person from the Parish Office, 14 Kidderminster Road, by email friends [dot] stjohns [dot] church [at] gmail [dot] com or phone 01527 853734. The talk takes place at St John’s on Tuesday 4th October at 7.30pm, doors open at 7.

Friends of St John’s raise funds to support the ongoing maintenance and restoration needs at Bromsgrove’s landmark, historic building. Events are organised to make full use of the space and to bring a new audience into the building.
