  • Tue 4 Oct 2016 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

St John the Baptist Church, 14 Kidderminster Rd, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire B61 7JW

Well known explorer, author & BBC Radio 4 broadcaster John Pilkington returns to St John’s with his latest talk. On Tuesday 4th October John will deliver his presentation “Russia & Europe: What Next?” where he will recount the stories of his solo journey through Eastern Europe and into Russia.

When asked about his latest travels John said “Passions are running high in Ukraine and the breakaway states of the Caucasus. Vladimir Putin’s adventures in Ukraine took the West by surprise. But I think, in some ways they followed a pattern that goes back more than a century to the legendry “Great Game” between Russia and Britain in Victoria times. Since the Soviet Union’s break-up, Transnistria, Abkhazia and South Ossetia have become Russia’s ‘forgotten’ satellite states – unrecognised and unheard of by most outsiders. Now Donetsk and Luhansk have joined the list, and Russia has full control of Crimea.

In 2015 John met people on both sides of these disputed borders, and promises some surprising insights in his talk.

Friends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade enthused “John has been described as “one of Britain’s best tellers of travellers’ tails, and his previous talks in St John’s have been inspiration and informative. John is a wonderful speaker, bring the tails of his travels to life with his fabulous photographs and enthusiastic and captivating style.

Tickets for John Pilkington “Russia & Europe: What Next?” are £7.50 each, with a special offer of just £2.50 for students. Available in person from the Parish Office, 14 Kidderminster Road, by email friends [dot] stjohns [dot] church [at] gmail [dot] com or phone 01527 853734. The talk takes place at St John’s on Tuesday 4th October at 7.30pm, doors open at 7.

Friends of St John’s raise funds to support the ongoing maintenance and restoration needs at Bromsgrove’s landmark, historic building. Events are organised to make full use of the space and to bring a new audience into the building.

Lucy Brett joined the BBFC as an Examiner in 2004 and became Education Officer in 2010, before being appointed Head of Education in 2012. Prior to joining the BBFC, she was a journalist for trade and consumer home entertainment magazines including Timecode, Total DVD and Home Entertainment Week and was also a media studies teacher.

As Head of Education she represent the BBFC at events like the Hay Literary Festival, the Cinemagic young people’s film festival in Belfast and the Cambridgeshire Young People’s Film Festival. These events, in addition to the BBFC's own education events, offer an extremely effective litmus test as to how younger people respond to film ratings, and what issues are important to them. Issues they regularly discuss include racist language in films and the need to protect children from potentially harmful material.

If anyone can capture a story, a movie, a vignette of time - then embrace it within the measure of a single song - it’s Mike Silver. Long heralded as a master craftsman of song-writing, singing and performing, his albums have retained a consistently high standard of storytelling and musicianship all down the years.

It’s the voice that you can’t miss, right from the get-go.....a warm, seasoned instrument in its own right that brings to life every song that it delivers.  Accompanied by his crystal-clear guitar work, together with restrained instrumental and vocal accompaniment, Mike makes every song totally his own.

Apart from being ‘regulars’ in the Dutch folk, country and bluegrass scene, Heartstrings have appeared on stages in Germany, Denmark and the USA, and are regular and well-loved guests in British folk and bluegrass clubs.

Martyn Joseph is a performer like no other: Shades of Springsteen, John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews there may be - but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives delivering his "songs of lyrical intelligence" according to BBC Radio 2's Bob Harris.

Martyn is a powerful singer and songwriter gifted with the rare ability to speak to the soul with his expressive and poignant lyrics. With a career spanning 30 years, 32 albums, over a half a million record sales and thousands of live performances, the versatility of his music touches genres of folk, rock, soul, folk funk and Americana, yet somehow all these labels cannot define the spirit of his music.

We are very proud that he has agreed to grace our Bromsgrove stage.

These Canadian folk stars rocked the folk/roots music scene as the rhythm section of Tanglefoot, a hard-working band with a massive presence and a fanatically loyal following throughout Canada, the US & Britain.

Now Rob Ritchie, Al Parrish and Steve Ritchie, along with percussionist/singer/songwriter Beaker Granger, have re-connected as RPR.

The new configuration affords the four veteran performers the opportunity to stretch their wings and create a rich and memorable interfusion of music, stories, laughter and reminiscence. It's light and shade, irreverent and poignant, gentle as a whisper and rampantly energetic.

And whether it's an original country song of Al's, Rob's incisive humour, the drop-dead vocal harmonies in a new acapella song or the occasional re-working of an old Tanglefoot tune, all the old chemical energy and impact ...are still there.
