  • Wed 30 Apr 2014 7:30 PM - Sat 3 May 2014 10:00 PM

The Beacon Church Centre, Whetty Lane, Rubery, B45 9DL

Rubery Drama Group is performing this memorable play to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the First World War.

In August 1914, during the early days of the first world war, the British Government was hurriedly seeking volunteers to join the armed forces to fight in the fields of Europe. it was suggested by the Government that men would enlist in this volunteer way more willingly if they could fight alongside their friends and colleagues from their home towns and so the concept of the 'Pals' battalion was born.

Whelan's title refers to the 700 strong Accrington battalion that marched jauntily off to war. But the play, which spans the period up to the Battle of the Somme in July 1916, is less about the men than the women left behind and their growing sense of solidarity.
