Bach - Concerto for Two Violins
Haydn - Overture: Armida
Schubert - Symphony no.5
A concert dedicated to lovers and lovers of fine music – spanning the ‘Baroque’, the ‘Classical’ and the ‘Romantic’ periods.
Mozart achieved renown with this 1775 commissioned overture and, some forty-years later, his influence may be detected in
Schubert’s Symphony No.5 the final work this afternoon. Beforehand though, and remaining ever popular today, is Beethoven’s
lyrical Romance, which is followed by Richard Laing and our guest violinist, Simon Chalk, for Bach’s Concerto.
The fifth piece, Overture Armida, was regarded by the composer as his finest opera.
This evening's conductor is Richard Laing, TMS music director.

Richard Laing, director and violin
Barber - Dover Beach

Chausson - Chanson perpétuell op.37
Dvorák - Piano Quintet op.81
Richard Laing is accompanied by his wife, Karen Wise, for this evening’s concert of music and song at St Laurence Church.
We open with one of Barber’s best works, Dover Beach, first heard in 1931. Some 50 years earlier, Borodin composed Quartet No.2
and we hear the third movement which featured in the movie ‘Kismet’. The first half concludes with Melancolie and beautiful song
by Chausson, a pupil of César Franck.
Our final work is from the Czech composer, Dvorák, and his captivating Piano Quintet. The lovely melody and exciting rhythm
evokes 19th-century Bohemian folk song & dance. Please note that TMS AGM preceds the concert at 6pm in the Ark.
