his lifetime and died a pauper. There can be no denying his creativity and latter day popularity, with his works frequently appearing
in any 'top ten' list. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music) is one of his best known works, featuring in films as diverse as

The first concert in the new season features great English and German music.
Central to this afternoon’s concert is a performance of Wagner’s beautiful Siegfried Idyll, written as a birthday present
to his wife Cosima. The second half of the concert is dedicated to Mozart and the astonishing Symphony No.40, one of his
best-known and best-loved works.
Completing this diverse programme will be wonderful music by Delius, Bridge and Worcestershire’s very own Edward Elgar.
Thisafternoon's conductor is Richard Laing, TMS music director.

DECEMBER 2008

Saturday December 6, 2008 ~ THE MIDLAND SINFONIA
7.30pm St Laurence Church, Alvechurch
The Midland Sinfonia in concert present their
'Candlelight Concert'
Copland - Appalachian Spring
Britten - Soirees Musicales
Grieg - Lyric Pieces
Ibert - Divertissement
Tchaikovsky - Music from The Nutcracker (replaces Bridge - Sir Roger de Coverley/A Christmas Dance)
The ever popular candlelit pre-christmas concert returns to St Laurence Church which hosts a lyrical programme of works, with
a nod to the coming festive celebrations.
We start with the wonderful Appalachian Springs, orchestrated from a one act ballet composed in the closing months of WWII.
Nearer to home, and a decade earlier, Britten produced his collection of salon pieces. Between Norway’s refreshing harmony and
an ‘entertainment’ from France, we turn to Russia for an ever popular seasonal piece 'The Nutcracker'. Well, it is Christmas!
